UNESCO City Évora Embraces Tech for Historic Center Preservation

Évora, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is embracing modern technology to preserve its historic center. The city has joined a smart cities project, aiming to automate energy-related processes and monetize positive behaviors. Innovations include replacing old building skylights with integrated architectural solutions and automating the cleaning of photovoltaic parks using drones, sensors, and robots.

The project, coordinated by EDP's Research and Development Center, seeks to fully automate these processes, with some aspects currently semi-automatic. Pilot tests are already underway in Spain, Portugal, and the Netherlands. Robots and drones are employed for tasks such as vegetation cutting, panel cleaning, and inspecting hot spots on panels. João Maciel, an innovator involved in these projects, recently discussed their impact on Portugal's energy and image on the Innovators League podcast.

Joining this project, Évora aims to intervene in its historic center while preserving its architecture. The city is one of eight historical European cities participating in this smart cities and energy communities project. Plans also include monetizing positive energy-related behaviors, such as using electric scooters, in Évora.

Évora's innovative approach to preserving its historic center while embracing modern technology is set to enhance the city's image and economy. The automation of photovoltaic park cleaning and monetization of positive energy behaviors are expected to bring significant benefits, with pilot tests already showing promising results.
