Underground Journey through Mexico's Rivers and Caves – Rio Secreto

Stumbling upon a grand cavern adorned with mesmerizing stalactites, we trekked waist-deep in icy water through the hidden labyrinth of Rio Secreto.

Caving, or spelunking, remains one of my top choices for exhilarating adventure travel activities. Across continents - South Africa, Guatemala, Iceland, and beyond - I've burrowed myself in the heart of Mother Earth, crawling through natural tunnels and passageways.

But the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico unveils a treasure trove of hidden caverns that warrant exploration.

The magic of wandering blindly into the unknown, unearthing the mysteries hidden just beyond the next turn, never ceases to intrigue me.

Visiting the secret marvel of Rio Secreto offers a glimpse into this seldom-unearthed realm.

Guided by our HazMat-clad leader "Ro", we meandered through the dense jungle towards one of the cavern entrances. Camera traps nestled nearby had recently snapped images of prowling jaguars dwelling in the vicinity.

The Mayan Underworld

Our clandestine adventure started with a sacred Mayan purification ritual, invoking the spirits of the death gods. The Maya considered these subterranean vaults as perilous gateways to Xibalba - the Mayan underworld.

Ancient relics, remnants, and carvings have been unveiled in the cenotes and caves gracing the Yucatan Peninsula, some dating back 13,000 years! These mysterious burialsites were often used for human and animal sacrifices, with many local Maya still avoiding them to this day.

In 2007, Rio Secreto's proprietor decided to allow a mere 10% of the natural reserve to be accessible for eco-tours, in order to fund conservation efforts for the rest of the territory.

Exploring Rio Secreto's Caves

Caves constitute a maze of passages and dramatic geological structures. Water drips sluggishly from the cavern's arched ceilings to form pristine pools at our feet. These waters are pathways through the porous rock, thus, their crystal-clear quality.

Beneath the cold embrace of the dark caverns, we embarked on a journey through countless chambers, ducking through narrow passageways and wading through water up to our chests, while vast chambers swallows houses whole.

Underground River Systems

Limestone caverns like Rio Secreto possess extraordinary sensitivity, which is why extensive measures are implemented to preserve their delicate beauty. With the meticulousness of a hummingbird hovering over a flower, Rio Secreto ensures that no artificial paths or intrusive lighting alter the environment.

It's just you, your flashlight, and the darkness.

Navigating through the labyrinthine passageways, it's not only the water's treacherous floor that keeps you on your toes, but the ever-present threat of falling into seemingly insignificant holes concealed by darkness.

Occasionally, our leader Rupert activated a couple of powerful waterproof flashlights, casting giant wave-like patterns of blue light across the water.

This water is part of a colossal network of rivers that traverses the Yucatan Peninsula's hollow limestone shell, making it the second-largest subterranean river system in the world.

Daredevil cave divers often explore the region's many underwater caverns, testing their mettle with the help of scuba gear. However, at Rio Secreto, the waters risk a shallow depth, making it feasible for exploration by novices like myself, without the need for extensive training or pricey equipment.

Getting There

Rio Secreto is situated a few miles south of Playa del Carmen, alongside Highway 307, in the Riviera Maya. It lies approximately an hour south of Cancun or 40 minutes north of Tulum.

If you prefer maintaining autonomy by means of a rental vehicle, you may drive there yourself; otherwise, opt for a local taxi or collectivo van, or arrange for transportation from your accommodation.
