UCLA Bruin Marching Band Returns from Exciting International Tour
The UCLA Bruin Marching Band has once again made a name for itself on the global stage, returning from an action-packed tour of Asia. The band, renowned for its spirited performances, recently visited Nagoya, Japan for the 35th annual Ekitopia Festival Parade.
The tour began on May 2, 2018, with the band's arrival in Nagoya. After a day of rest, they hit the ground running with rehearsals on May 3. The following day, they took centre stage as the featured performer at the Ekitopia Festival Parade.
The Ekitopia Festival, held during Japan's "Golden Week," is a celebration that includes The Emperor's Birthday, Constitution Memorial Day, Greenery Day, and Children's Day. This year, the festival took place on May 4 and 5, 2018. The UCLA Bruin Marching Band was joined by several local high school bands and traditional Japanese dance troupes, making for a vibrant and culturally rich event.
The governor of Aichi Prefecture, Hideaki Omura, was present at the parade to welcome the UCLA Bruin Marching Band. This was not the first time the band had performed at the Ekitopia Festival. In fact, the UCLA Drumline had previously graced the stage at this event.
The UCLA Bruin Marching Band's international performances extend beyond Japan. In 2018, they also performed at the Ekitopia Festival Parade in 2018, and in 2016, they participated in the Taoyuan International Band Festival in Taiwan. Prior to this, in 2010, fourteen members of the UCLA Drumline performed at the Ekitopia Festival Parade in 2010.
The band's Asian adventures are not limited to these events. In 2006 and 2008, they performed at the Chinese New Year Night Parade in Hong Kong. After their successful performances in Nagoya, the band returned to Los Angeles on May 7, 2018.
Upon their return, most of the students headed directly to their classes, demonstrating their commitment to both their musical passion and academic pursuits. The UCLA Bruin Marching Band's international performances not only showcase their talent but also foster cultural exchange and understanding, making them a valuable ambassador for the university and the city of Los Angeles.
