Typhoon Bualoi Batters Vietnam, Leaving 19 Dead and Widespread Destruction
Vietnam has endured a tumultuous year with three powerful typhoons, the latest and most devastating being Typhoon Bualoi. The storm has left a trail of destruction, claiming lives and causing widespread disruption.
Typhoon Bualoi, packing winds up to 133 kilometres per hour and waves reaching 8 metres, battered Vietnam's coast. Four airports, including Da Nang International, were suspended, and thousands evacuated. The storm's wrath was particularly felt in the northern province of Ninh Binh, where nine lives were lost. Hue, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, and Ha Tinh also suffered severe flooding and power outages, with a total of 19 deaths and 21 people missing.
Heavy rains in Hanoi and several northern provinces added to the chaos. Bualoi's fury extended to the Philippines, causing at least 10 deaths before reaching Vietnam. The storm destroyed temporary bridges, flooded roads, and submerged vehicles, leaving many communities isolated and causing disruption in urban areas. Travellers are advised to exercise caution due to ongoing disruptions and safety risks.
Typhoon Bualoi has underscored the growing frequency and severity of extreme weather events in Southeast Asia. With 19 deaths and extensive damage, it has reignited concerns about the region's vulnerability to such storms. Authorities are working to restore essential services and assist affected communities.
