Title: A Sinister Twist and Epic Journey: How Wicked, Dune, and Substance Lead the Genre in the Oscars Spotlight

After taking a break in the realm of sci-fi, horror, and fantasy genres at the 2023 Academy Awards, save for the historic victory of Godzilla Minus One, the 2024 awards are shaping up to be quite different. Dune: Part Two, Wicked, and The Substance are major contenders in several categories, including Best Picture.

This morning saw the Academy release the nominees, with the event delayed due to the devastating wildfires affecting Los Angeles. Leading the pack is Wicked, which boasts 10 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actress, and Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande's performances as Elphaba and Glinda, respectively, Original Score, and more.

Dune: Part Two follows, securing five nominations, including a Best Picture nod, as does The Substance, with Coralie Fargeat earning a spot in the Best Director category. There's also excitement for Demi Moore, recognized for her standout performance in The Substance, and The Wild Robot, io9's top movie of 2024, which made it into the Best Animated Feature category as well as Original Score.
