The Transformation of Captain America: Brave New World's Serpent Society, Originating from Comic Books to the MCU
In the whimsical world of comic books, a multitude of eccentric and bizarre villains have emerged to challenge our favorite superheroes. However, when it comes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), these antagonists often receive a more serious treatment, especially in anticipated films like "Captain America: Brave New World." This film is set to redefine some of the comics' sillier adversaries, including the Serpent Society.
Remember the time when "Captain America: Serpent Society" was used as a joking title back in 2014 during a Marvel event? Well, it's no longer a punchline. In an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly, actor Giancarlo Esposito, producer Nate Moore, and director Julius Onah, shed some light on the transformation of the Serpent Society for the new film.
In the comics, the Serpent Society thrived as a band of flamboyant supervillains boasting various snake-themed abilities, such as teleportation and enhanced strength. The challenge for the creators was to find a way to reinvent this quirky ensemble while retaining their essence.
Esposito, who portrays Seth Voelker aka Sidewinder in the movie, reflected on the process, stating, "I went back to the comic. I figured out what the guy looked like. I didn't want to look like that." He then emphasized the importance of combining his actor's groundedness with subtle nods to the original comic-book character to create a compelling on-screen persona.
Esposito was elated about the brooding representation of Sidewinder, describing his character as "very delicious and powerful." Furthermore, Onah hinted at the impact Esposito's portrayal would have on the Serpent Society, mentioning that his performance would "bring a grounding and a gravitas" to the group.
Luckily for us, we won't have to wait long to witness the menacing Serpent Society, as "Captain America: Brave New World" is scheduled to hit theaters on Valentine's Day. Keep up-to-date with the latest releases from Marvel, Star Wars, Star Trek, DC, and Doctor Who to satiate your hunger for all things geek culture.
