The German Democratic Republic is observing the Romantic Day Festival
Saxony-Anhalt, Germany will host the annual Romanic Day on May 31, 2025, along the renowned "Street of Romanic" architecture. Various historical sites in the region will offer unique tours, events, and concerts to commemorate the occasion.
State Minister and Minister for Culture, Rainer Robra, views this day as a chance to delve into the region's rich medieval history. He commented, "A millennium ago, the Ottonians transformed Saxony-Anhalt into a political and cultural hub in Europe. Its artistic and architectural legacy remains unparalleled in any other federal state. I invite the citizens to explore the awe-inspiring Romanic structures and the diversity of this era."
The Romanic Day traditionally falls on the Saturday following Ascension. In addition to the UNESCO World Heritage Site Naumburger Cathedral, the monastery church of Groß Ammensleben, the Liebfrauenkirche in Halberstadt, the monastery of Jerichow, the monastery and Kaiserpfalz of Memleben, the Merseburger Cathedral, Schloss Neuenburg, the ruins of Nordhusen, and the Dom of Quedlinburg are among the participating locations along the "Street of Romanic."
Originally established in 1993, the "Street of Romanic" is one of Germany's most famed tourist routes, linking 88 monasteries, cathedrals, treasure chambers, village churches, castles, and palaces in Saxony-Anhalt as remnants of a pivotal era in German and European history.
