The Era of Sci-Fi Recognition Arrives with Dune, Wicked, and The Substance Securing Golden Globe Recognitions
Another year could see a genre film joining the select group of movies that take home the Best Picture title. This happened back in 2018 with The Shape of Water, and now, we have three potential contenders that have secured significant recognition. The 2023 Golden Globe nominations were unveiled on Monday, and among the notable films are Dune: Part Two, Wicked, and The Substance*, each receiving multiple nods, including Best Picture. The Globes often act as a precursor to the Academy Awards, so fans of sci-fi and fantasy genres can expect some excitement.
Dune: Part Two received the smallest number of nominations, bagging only one for Best Picture – Drama and Best Original Score for Hans Zimmer. Next in line is Wicked, which earned nominations for Best Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Actress for Cynthia Erivo, Best Supporting Actress for Ariana Grande, and one for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement. However, the top genre pick was The Substance, snagging five nominations: Best Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Actress for Demi Moore, Best Supporting Actress for Margaret Qualley, and Best Director and Best Screenplay for Coralie Fargeat.
Of course, there are a few questionable aspects to consider, such as the separation of Wicked's lead actresses, the lack of Cinematic and Box Office Achievement nod for Dune, and the Globes' practice of nominating more films due to being split into two categories. Nevertheless, these nominations serve as a testament to the fact that the films have captured the hearts of the voters and bodes well for all of them coming Oscar night in 2024.
Additional genre films also received recognition. For example, The Penguin scored three nominations – Best Actor nods for Hugh Grant, Sebastian Stan, and Amy Adams for their respective roles in Heretic, A Different Man, and Nightbitch. Furthermore, Squid Game was honored with a Best TV Series – Drama nomination, despite not being available on Netflix until December 26. House of the Dragon also got a nomination for Emma D’Arcy in the Best Actress category.
The 82nd annual Golden Globe Awards will be held on CBS and Stream on Paramount+ on January 5, 2025, at 8 p.m. EST. Below is the full list of nominees:
