Summertime Border Checkpoints in Switzerland: Where to Expect Screenings

In the heart of Europe, countries such as Switzerland have been tightening controls at Schengen internal borders due to concerns about illegal migration and potential terrorist threats. However, it's important to note that the situation regarding traffic jams in Germany remains unchanged from the past few months, according to the German government.

Getting to Switzerland may take longer than usual due to these increased border controls. Yet, there are no additional checks between Italy and Austria and Switzerland, and the free movement of people continues at the borders with France, Germany, Italy, Austria, and Liechtenstein, with no routine passport checks for EU/EFTA nationals.

France, like Switzerland, has border controls in place at all international entry points, including with Switzerland, due to threats to public policy, public order, and internal security. These checks in France are random rather than systematic.

It's worth mentioning that there have not been any controls in place between Switzerland and its neighbor Liechtenstein for decades.

From October 12, 2025, Switzerland and its neighboring Schengen countries will implement the EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) for all third-country nationals. This system replaces passport stamps with biometric data registration (fingerprints, facial images) digitally recorded at border crossings, enhancing migration management and streamlining future entries.

In summary, while Switzerland’s borders largely remain open and borderless within the Schengen framework, enhanced biometric tracking is arriving soon, and exceptional internal controls may be applied based on security or immigration developments. It's essential to plan for potential traffic slowdowns and bottlenecks when crossing any border, whether with neighboring states or countries farther afield. Always carry a valid ID card or passport when traveling.
