Scholars from Jordan, Lebanon, and Tunisia honored as recipients of the esteemed 43rd Kuwait Prize
The Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS) announced the winners of the 43rd Kuwait Prize for 2024 on July 9, 2025. The prestigious awards, launched in 1979, support KFAS's mission to promote scientific excellence and encourage Arab researchers worldwide.
This year's winners were chosen based on their research and intellectual contributions that have had a global impact. The awards are presented annually in four main categories - Basic Sciences, Applied Sciences, Economic and Social Sciences, and Arts and Literature - while a fifth category, Emerging Specialized Sciences, is awarded biennially.
In the Basic Sciences (Biological Sciences) category, Professor Ashraf Samir Ibrahim from Jordan was honoured. He is the Director of the PhD Program in Translational Medicine at the Lundquist Institute at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in the United States. Professor Ibrahim was recognised for his significant scientific contributions in applied biology and translational medicine, particularly for pioneering research aimed at developing innovative diagnostic and therapeutic solutions for chronic and complex diseases.
In the Applied Sciences (Engineering Sciences) category, the prize was jointly awarded to two professors. Professor Charbel Hanna Farhat from Lebanon, Professor of Aircraft Structures, Aeronautics and Astronautics at Stanford University, USA, and Professor Khaled Qassem Latif from Tunisia, Dean of the School of Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), were honoured. They were recognised for their groundbreaking contributions in systems engineering, communications, and intelligent design that have significantly influenced advanced global engineering industries.
In the Economic and Social Sciences, Professor Shawkat Hamoudeh from Jordan was honoured in the Economics and International Business category. He is a Professor at Drexel University, USA. Professor Dima Al-Jamali from Lebanon was honoured in the Administrative Sciences category. She is the Vice President for Academic Affairs at the Canadian University in Dubai. Both Professor Al-Jamali and Professor Hamoudeh, along with Professor Zeidan Kafafi, were honoured for their global impact through their research and intellectual contributions.
Professor Zeidan Kafafi from Jordan was honoured in the Humanities, Arts and Literature (History of Civilizations and Human Thought) category. He is a Professor of Archaeology at Yarmouk University.
The Kuwait Prize continues to acknowledge and celebrate the outstanding achievements of Arab scholars, fostering a culture of scientific excellence and intellectual growth.
