Ryan Reynolds contemplates that Gambit could've experienced a Deadpool-like leak situation.
According to Gambit himself, he's about to make his mark. Channing Tatum's appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine was a major shocker, mainly due to the fact that he hadn't previously portrayed the character. He sure did give it his all though. Tatum spent close to a decade collaborating with directors and writers in an attempt to bring the card-slinging Cajun to the big screen, but alas, he never quite made it over the finish line. But, as per co-star Ryan Reynolds, all Tatum needed was an opportunity.
Reynolds, in a chat with Entertainment Weekly, revealed, "I'm not completely sure about the financial dealings behind closed doors at Marvel, but I do know they're quite fond of him in that role. It's a situation similar to mine. Once they see it works, that's what they really need. Sometimes all they need is to witness it in action."
Reynolds is referring to a significant moment in July 2014 (it just so happens that Tatum was starting work on Gambit around the same time), when some "leaked" footage of Tatum as Deadpool went viral. The footage took off, Fox recognized the potential in the character, and the rest is history. In essence, Reynolds believes that with Deadpool & Wolverine showing the world what Tatum envisioned for the character, and seeing the audience's response, the powers that be might, eventually, be willing to give him more responsibilities.
Should that happen, though, it wouldn't be anytime soon. Marvel Studios has a full plate for the upcoming years, mainly concluding the Multiverse Saga with films leading to Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars in 2026 and 2027. However, most fans predict mutants to be on the agenda afterwards – and what better time for Gambit to emerge from his hiding spot and make a name for himself in the MCU?
Do you suppose a Channing Tatum-led Gambit movie will eventually materialize? And did his appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine have the same impact as the leaked Deadpool footage? Voice your thoughts below.
Deadpool & Wolverine is now available on digital and Blu-ray, and it'll be hitting Disney+ soon.
