The death of former biathlete Laura Dahlmeier continues to arouse much sympathy. Meanwhile, as travelers prepare for their summer vacations, the Bavarian State Dental Association offers guidance on maintaining good oral health while on the go.

To ensure a healthy smile during travel, the Bavarian State Dental Association recommends packing essential oral hygiene items such as a toothbrush, toothpaste, and dental floss. These basics are critical in removing plaque and food debris, preventing dental problems regardless of location.

While a detailed official travel oral hygiene set may not be available, standard dental care advice typically emphasizes carrying these items for daily cleaning during travel. A small bottle of mouthwash and interdental brushes can further improve oral hygiene, especially when circumstances limit thorough brushing.

For families with children or physically active individuals, a dental emergency kit and a mouthguard are recommended. Braces wearers should pack brushes, cleaning agent, and a storage box. In case of a dental emergency while on vacation, tourists can ask the tour operator or hotel staff for nearby dental practices.

Specific recommendations for oral health during travel are available on the BLZK's patient portal under "healthy teeth on vacation." A checklist, a fold-out card with first aid tips for a dental emergency, and the language guide "Ouch - Toothache on vacation" in seven languages are also available on the portal.

It's worth noting that health insurances do not automatically cover the costs for an emergency dental treatment abroad. The reimbursement depends on various factors, including the type of treatment, the vacation country, the health insurance, and the patient themselves. It's best to ask about the expected costs when making an appointment. A receipt or invoice upon cash payment is necessary.
