Prepared to Reignite the Competitions: Squid Game Season 2 Unveils Its Initial Teaser
In an brilliant stroke of marketing timing, Netflix has dropped the official teaser for Squid Game Season 2 on Halloween.
Squid Game season 2 brings back Lee Jung-jae’s Seong Gi-hun to the deadly competition that almost claimed his life in Netflix's Emmy-winning first season. As in season 1, Gi-hun returns as player 456 to the dystopian schoolyard-game-inspired survival tournament. A change of heart, hinted at by Gi-hun's red-dyed hair before his trip to the U.S., is explained in the show's synopsis as a new resolution. Maybe it's to dismantle the games from within, without his signature red hair.
Squid Game Season 2 introduces a new batch of characters to either root for or wish a swift end to due to their ruthless self-interest. Alongside these new faces, some familiar ones return, like Lee Byung-hun as the enigmatic Front Man, Wi Ha-jun as the principled police detective Hwang Jun-ho, and Gong Yoo as the jovial Salesman.
Joining the cast for Season 2 are actors Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Gyu-young, Lee Jin-uk, Park Sung-hoon, Yang Dong-geun, Kang Ae-sim, Lee David, Choi Seung-hyung, Roh Jae-won, Jo Yu-ri, and Wong Ji-an. But be warned, these newcomers' tenure in the game isn't likely to be long, based on the first season's trend.
Netflix's Squid Game has proven itself a ratings sensation, drawing in "over 1.65 billion viewing hours in 28 days, and reaching 111 million accounts, making it Netflix’s first series to surpass 100 million members at launch." The series swiftly became a pop culture phenomenon, inspiring Halloween costumes, Futurama homages, and a reality show tragically missing its cautionary message called Squid Game: The Challenge.
At the Emmys, Squid Game made history with 14 nominations and 6 wins, becoming the first non-English language show to be nominated for Outstanding Drama series and for director-writer-producer Hwang Dong-hyuk and Lee to win their respective categories, marking the first time winners in non-English language series. We hope Squid Game continues its successful run.
Squid Game Season 2 is set to premiere on Netflix on December 26. The final season is scheduled for release in 2025.
