Prepare for Shock: Anaconda Makes its Descent through Chimney for Christmas Celebration in 2025
Whispers of an upcoming Anaconda film have circulated since around 2020, and in August, we discovered that Paul Rudd and Jack Black had signed on for a peculiar take on the 1997 creature feature that originally starred Jennifer Lopez, Ice Cube, an exceptionally flamboyant Jon Voight, and an even more extraordinary colossal snake. And here we are: unexpectedly, it's scheduled for release on December 25, 2025!
This announcement from Sony Pictures labeled the new Anaconda as a "reimagined comedy." Accompanying the news was a video featuring an enthusiastically ecstatic Rudd and Black, who share the big screen in the movie directed and co-written by Tom Gormican (The Incredible Weight of Massive Talent).
"Get ready for a massive snake that'll tear you apart!" Black declares.
In August, the plot was hinted at as centering around a group of friends dealing with mid-life crises who decide to remake their beloved youth film. They venture into the rainforest, only to find themselves in a life-or-death struggle against natural disasters, monstrous snakes, and violent criminals. It certainly sounds like a "reimagined comedy" rather than a remake of the original, which follows a film crew attempting to find a giant snake in the Amazon, only to realize that a human antagonist (Voight with a hysterical accent) with a vendetta similar to Moby Dick might be the real threat. It eventually became a beloved cult classic.
Gormican, a pro at meta-comedies thanks to The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent (starring Nicolas Cage as a version of himself and Pedro Pascal as "Nick Cage's biggest fan"), seems like the perfect fit for this new Anaconda. He also co-wrote this year's Eddie Murphy Netflix comedy Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F.
If Rudd and Black can bring half of the same exuberance to the movie as they show in this promo, it's bound to be a hilarious good time. Christmas is typically one of the busiest release windows each year, so for Sony to secure the date for a big snake comedy is quite optimistic. Therefore, mark your calendars: the new Anaconda will hit theaters this coming Christmas: December 25, 2025.
