Potential impact on summer 2026 tourism due to shift in international flights from Sochi and Krasnodar
Krasnodar Airport is set to become a major player in the Russian aviation industry, as it plans to relocate some international flights currently operated by Sochi and Mineralnye Vody airports.
This development, which is a gradual process, is expected to begin in the summer of 2026, with an active flight program to Turkey being a significant part of the new flight schedule.
Airlines such as Aeroflot, S7 Airlines, and Ural Airlines may possibly relocate some of their international flights to Krasnodar Airport, according to recent discussions.
The Russian Tourism Agents Alliance, an organisation involved in the discussions, believes that this move could have a considerable impact on the tourist flow in the Krasnodar region, both in the summer of 2026 and beyond.
Alexan Mkrtchyan, Vice-President of the Russian Tourism Agents Alliance, has suggested that air companies may initially transfer a portion of their international flights from both Sochi Airport and Mineralnye Vody to Krasnodar Airport due to its proximity.
However, this shift could also make Sochi Airport more appealing to tourists traveling within Russia, according to Mkrtchyan's prediction. He believes that the reduced international flight traffic at Sochi and Mineralnye Vody airports could lead to a focus on domestic travel, potentially making Sochi Airport more popular among domestic tourists.
This new development is not without its uncertainties, as the potential impact on the tourist flow in the Krasnodar region during the summer of 2026 is yet to be fully understood.
As the relocation of international flights continues, Krasnodar Airport is poised to take on a more significant role in Russia's aviation industry, offering more international flight options to travellers.
