Parents Petition Deutsche Bahn for Family Seat Reservations

Parents and family advocacy groups in Germany have launched a petition, backed by around 128,000 signatures, calling for the reintroduction of family seat reservations on Deutsche Bahn. The petition, initiated by the German Automobile Club (VCD), is a response to the railway's abolition of the rule that allowed parents to reserve seats for their children at a fixed price for long-distance train travel.

The petition was handed over to the railway by VCD chairman Matthias Kurzeck. He suggested that Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder could reintroduce family reservations as the first step in his 'agenda for satisfied customers on the rails' with the change of timetable in December. The railway, however, has stuck to its decision, stating that children up to and including 14 years of age do not have to pay for railway tickets when accompanied by adults.

The abolition of this rule has faced criticism from associations and politicians. A family of four would have to pay an additional 44 euros for seat reservation for a round trip since mid-June.

The petition for the reintroduction of family seat reservations highlights the concerns of parents and families regarding the comfort and safety of their children during long-distance train travel. While the railway maintains its current policy, the significant number of signatures and the suggestion from VCD chairman Kurzeck may influence the federal transport minister's decisions in the upcoming timetable change.
