The picturesque region of Lower Austria is gearing up for a bountiful year, with the Badner Bahn transportation system set to provide a more comfortable journey for an estimated 15 million passengers. This upgrade is part of a broader effort to enhance the region's tourism offerings.

Despite some ambiguity in the specific numbers for overnight stays and foreign visitor growth broken down by summer and winter seasons, the tourism landscape in Lower Austria is showing promising signs. While the region exhibits a somewhat more cautious attitude towards tourism compared to other Austrian regions, the overall tourism performance indicators remain robust across Austria, including key alpine and mountain areas.

According to Michael Duscher, Managing Director of Lower Austria Tourism, the region offers a compelling vacation destination, thanks to its rich combination of nature, culinary delights, and culture. The success of the tourism sector is evident in the recent figures, with the winter season from November 2024 to April 2025 showing a significant increase in the number of overnight stays compared to the previous year, marking a two percent growth.

This growth in overnight stays was not limited to German guests, as the number of foreign vacationers also increased by a more substantial 4.6 percent during the winter season. In fact, the growth in the number of foreign vacationers was higher than the growth in the number of German guests, indicating a growing interest in Lower Austria from international visitors.

The peak in overnight stays during the winter season was followed by a promising summer, with nearly 1.44 million overnight stays recorded in May and June this year. The summer season is expected to continue the positive trend, with the peak in overnight stays anticipated in the months of July and August.

Johanna Mikl-Leitner, the landeshauptfrau of Lower Austria, described the start of the summer as successful, reflecting the positive momentum the region has gained. As the Badner Bahn prepares to welcome more passengers, Lower Austria is poised to continue its tourism growth trajectory, making it an increasingly attractive destination for both domestic and international travellers.
