Optimistic 2021 Tourist Season Ahead for Brac Airport in Croatia

Brac Airport Primed for Summer 2021: Here's What's in Store

Brac Airport is gearing up for the upcoming summer season, anticipating a recovery in the tourism sector and air traffic. We caught up with Brac Airport Director, Tonci Peovic, to get the lowdown on what we can expect this year.

For years, Brac Airport has hosted two routes operated by Croatian national airline, Croatia Airlines. One of these is the domestic line between Zagreb and Brac, which operates twice a week during the summer schedule on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Croatia Airlines plans to maintain this schedule for the summer season of 2021.

In addition, Croatia Airlines is gearing up to re-start its long-term charter line from Graz to Brac. This arrangement, implemented in collaboration with tour operators in previous seasons, will operate from mid-May to early October.

CSA, a Czech company, has operated charter flights in the past but hasn’t announced its flight plans for this season yet. Charter flights are primarily dependent on the sale of package deals, and bookings typically begin once spring arrives and any restrictive measures are eased.

German Sundair has plans to introduce charter flights from Berlin and Dusseldorf from early May to late October. This announcement was made back in November last year.

Brac Airport will also welcomes charter flights from Bern and Graz this summer, operated by Great Dane Airlines in the postseason, from September to October. The airline will operate an E195 aircraft to Brac, which accommodates 118 passengers with this carrier.

Back in 2018, TUI introduced two charter lines to Brac from Brussels and Deauville, while the following year saw an additional line from Rotterdam. However, as of now, there’s no word from TUI regarding their operations for this summer, so it remains to be seen whether they will operate to Brac in 2021.

Luxair introduced the Luxembourg - Brac line in 2018 but did not operate last year due to objective reasons. Peovic confirmed that negotiations with the airline are ongoing, and there’s hope that Luxair will reintroduce this route as early as this summer.

Due to the pandemic and its impact on air traffic, the airport has reduced prices for several aircraft groups, sharing the risk of restarting traffic to Brac Airport. Peovic also highlighted potential positive effects on the airport from changes in the hotel group's ownership structure on the island, but these implications are expected to materialize in 2022.

All things considered, Brac Airport is aiming for 70% of the passenger volume compared to 2019 figures, if the announced traffic for this summer season holds up.
