Open Biking Route Across Romanian-Serbian Border Operates During Last Weekend of July

Bicycle riders can traverse the Romania-Serbia border from July 26-28, pedaling along a 37-kilometer route that starts in Timișoara and tracks the Bega River up to the border. The Otelec crossing point will facilitate this border crossing for cyclists, with the bike path leading all the way.

Open Biking Route Across Romanian-Serbian Border Operates During Last Weekend of July

The Romania-Serbia border will be opening its doors to cyclists and boat traffic on specific weekends, as part of a long-term policy extending from March to October 2024. This initiative, launched by the Timiș County Council in collaboration with the Timișoara Territorial Inspectorate of the Border Police, aims to promote sustainable transportation and the Bega Canal area as a tourist destination.

The upcoming operational weekends for border crossings are scheduled for August 24–25, September 20–21–22 (an extra weekend), September 28–29, and October 26–27. During these periods, cyclists can cross the border using the bike path along the Bega Canal, and individuals can also use waterways between Timișoara and Zrenjanin. Only an identity document is required for crossing during these times, and the border is accessible between 8 AM and 8 PM.

The Otelec border crossing point will be used for cyclists to cross the border. The bike path will be accessible between 8 AM and 8 PM during the mentioned period. This policy will be operational for both the bike path set up along the Bega Canal and for boat traffic between Timișoara and Zrenjanin, at the Romanian-Serbian border.

The Timiș County Council is working with the Banat Water Basin Administration and the Zrenjanin City Hall on this project. A total of 2,297 people have crossed the Romanian-Serbian border in this manner from March to June 2022.

Alin Nica, president of the Timiș County Council, stated that the initiative promotes sustainable transport and the Bega Canal area as a green destination. This unique border crossing policy underscores the commitment to fostering cross-border cooperation and sustainable tourism, making the region an attractive destination for cyclists and nature enthusiasts alike.

Cyclists can take advantage of the unique opportunity to cross the Romania-Serbia border using the Otelec border crossing point during the bike path's operational hours, which are from 8 AM to 8 PM, as part of an initiative promoting sustainable transportation and the Bega Canal area as a tourist destination. Meanwhile, individuals can also enjoy traveling between Timișoara and Zrenjanin via waterways, further enhancing the region's appeal as a tourist destination that also encourages outdoor activities like cycling and boating, thereby contributing to an eco-friendly lifestyle.
