News announcement: Chris Evans to Rejoin MCU for Upcoming Avengers: Cataclysm
Before San Diego Comic-Con announced unexpectedly that Robert Downey Jr. was returning to the MCU as Doctor Doom, there were whispers that Marvel Studios was attempting to bring back some initial Avengers for another team-up. Now, it appears we're edging closer to this possibility.
As reported by The Wrap, Chris Evans has joined the cast of Avengers: Doomsday. Interestingly, the publication mentions that there are no specifics yet regarding the nature of Evans' role, which could imply that he's not resurrecting his part as Steve Rogers, the original Captain America—but then again, given Downey's return in another role through multiversal tricks, as he did to reprise the character of Fantastic Four's Johnny Storm in Deadpool & Wolverine.
This wouldn't be the first indication that Evans might return, following Steve's on-screen aging and retirement (thanks to some time stone trickery) in the finale of Avengers: Endgame, handing over the shield to Sam Wilson for Falcon and the Winter Soldier and the upcoming Captain America: Brave New World. Back in 2021, Evans dismissed a report suggesting his return for a future Marvel project, and in light of last year's speculations about Avengers returning, he again stated that his time in the MCU had come to an end.
“No one’s spoken to me about it,” Evans shared with The View at the time. “And look, I would never say never, but I really—I’m very protective. It’s a very precious role to me, so it would have to be just right.”
Perhaps Evans has now found something that's "just right." Or perhaps an enormous sum of money. Maybe both!
