Nestlé Waters Faces CHF500k Compensation, Protests Over Sale Fears

Nestlé Waters Switzerland has been ordered to pay CHF500,000 ($626,000) in compensation for using non-compliant carbon filters at its Henniez facility. Meanwhile, around a hundred protesters gathered at Nestlé's headquarters in Vevey to demonstrate against the proposed sale of Nestlé Waters to a partner.

The protest, which brought together trade union delegations from seven European countries, expressed concerns about job security and production sites. Demonstrators waved flags from a dozen European trade unions and marched behind a banner stating 'The future of Nestlé Waters workers is not for sale'.

The protest comes amidst ongoing controversy surrounding Nestlé Waters' use of banned treatments at various bottling sites in France since early 2024. Protesters distributed a leaflet highlighting previous Nestlé disposals and partnerships that often resulted in plant closures, job losses, and the erosion of social rights.

Christoph Kauffmann, co-chairman of Nestlé's European Information and Consultation Committee (CICEN), confirmed that Nestlé often divests unprofitable or scandal-plagued businesses through joint ventures. A meeting between the CICEN and Nestlé representatives is scheduled for Tuesday to discuss employee concerns.
