Stuck waiting and cursing the skies, hundreds of travelers found themselves in a pickle due to the malfunction of the baggage sorting system at Terminal 2 in Cologne/Bonn Airport. The system broke down overnight, leading to lengthy delays at check-in, rebookings, and some unfortunate souls missing their flights entirely.
According to airline Eurowings, a staggering 640 of their passengers were left in limbo due to the technical mishap. Eurowings expressed their apologies for the inconvenience and confirmed that all affected passengers were rebooked onto later flights.
The baggage sorting system, a crucial piece of machinery in such a bustling terminal, failed around midnight. Until repairs were completed early morning at 7:30, both incoming and departing passengers had to make do with the lesser-powered baggage system in Terminal 1. This caused delays and hold-ups at the check-ins. Even after the repair, it took some time for operations to return to normal. The airport hummed with planes taking off and landing throughout the night.
Unfortunately, the extent of the impact on passengers from other airlines is yet to be determined, as the airport spokesperson explained. In total, 25 aircraft departed with delays, including prolonged delays of up to one and a half hours. Some incoming passengers also faced delays while waiting for their luggage.
