Ministry of Transport Launches MOVERS - Active to School, Expanding Safer Routes for Children
The Ministry of Transport has unveiled a new decree and expanded the MOVERS program, effective from the 2025/2026 school year. This initiative, MOVERS - Active to School, supports municipalities in creating safer routes for children to commute to schools near them on foot, by bicycle, or on roller skates.
The program offers consulting services and information materials to help municipalities implement school streets and school zones. School streets temporarily close roads to motorized traffic during school hours, while school zones permanently close them. Additionally, the program provides school route plans, cycling proficiency badges, and visible route markings to promote active and safe school commuting.
The new decree, created by the Ministry of Transport, outlines the legal process for implementing these measures. It covers signage requirements and cooperation between authorities, providing clear foundations for municipalities to establish school streets and school zones easily and securely. Currently, no cities in Baden-Württemberg have publicly announced concrete plans for these initiatives.
The cross-ministerial MOVERS - Active to School program, led by the Ministry of Transport, aims to strengthen children's safe and active mobility to schools. With the new decree and expanded program, municipalities can now more easily and securely implement school streets and school zones, fostering safer and more active school commuting.
