Mexico, Cuba Sign Pact to Protect Biosphere Reserves
Mexico and Cuba have signed a cooperation agreement to safeguard and study their respective biosphere reserves. The pact, signed by Dr. Alejandro Rico Delgado, head of the Sierra de Manantlán Biosphere Reserve in Mexico, and his Cuban counterpart, focuses on the Sierra del Rosario in Cuba and the Sierra de Manantlán in Mexico.
The agreement, a new protocol, aims to promote agrobiodiversity and rural production systems, biological corridors, and connectivity between natural spaces in both reserves. It also includes studies on the effects of climate change on these ecosystems. The two reserves are now recognized as 'sisters', rekindling a biocultural relationship between them.
With this agreement, Mexico and Cuba commit to working together to conserve and protect their biosphere reserves. The protocol will help improve preservation efforts and foster a deeper understanding of these ecosystems, ensuring their sustainability for future generations.
