China's domestic tourism industry is experiencing a significant rebound and growth following the pandemic, with a surge in revenue and the number of trips taken. During the 2025 Chinese New Year, the tourism industry generated approximately 677 billion yuan, marking a 7% increase from the previous year and substantially higher than pre-pandemic levels [1].

One of the most notable developments in this growing market is the recent opening of Legoland Shanghai, the first-ever Legoland in China, which welcomed thousands of local tourists on its opening day. The park, spanning an area of 318,000 square meters, caters to the demand for themed and educational travel experiences, aligning with the broader trend of expanding domestic recreational infrastructure to meet the surging demand for family-oriented tourism [2].

Eager Lego fans, wearing themed shirts and waving branded flags, enjoyed the park's attractions, which include a miniature train ride and a dragon-themed rollercoaster. The opening of Legoland Shanghai is hoped to capitalize on a domestic tourism boom in China, as Beijing encourages local governments to heavily market their attractions on social media and offers subsidies to make domestic travel more affordable for Chinese citizens [3].

However, profitability remains a challenge for many local companies in the theme park industry, especially those with less brand recognition. Despite this, companies like Warner Brothers are planning to open a Harry Potter experience in Shanghai by 2027, and Toy giant Hasbro announced that its Peppa Pig park is in the phase of creative design [4].

The Chinese Legoland is the biggest branch of the British-owned theme park franchise, joining a growing list of family-friendly entertainment options in Shanghai. The wider boom in local tourism in China has led companies to increase their plans for attractions, ensuring that families have a variety of immersive and educational experiences to choose from.

As the domestic tourism market continues to grow, it is clear that China is investing in its recreational infrastructure to cater to the increasing demand for family-oriented travel. With the opening of Legoland Shanghai and other attractions, families have more opportunities than ever to create unforgettable memories and enjoy a fun-filled day out.
