Etihad Airways, the Abu Dhabi-based airline, has made a significant stride in the airline industry by introducing first-class suites on its Airbus A321LR jets. This move marks a major shift in how luxury air travel is perceived on shorter flights, offering premium experiences typically reserved for long-haul widebody aircraft.

On Thursday, Etihad Airways took delivery of its first Airbus A321LR in Hamburg. This is the first of 30 A321LR aircraft to join Etihad's fleet, with 20 leased from AerCap and 10 on order from Airbus.

The inclusion of first-class suites on a narrowbody aircraft like the A321LR is unprecedented and sets a new standard for luxury air travel on medium-haul flights. Typically, such premium cabins are found only on widebody aircraft, making this a notable departure from industry norms.

The suites provide a private, enclosed space with amenities like fully-flat beds, large screens, Bluetooth pairing, and wireless charging. This level of luxury was previously associated with long-haul flights, underscoring Etihad’s commitment to delivering high-end experiences across different flight types.

Etihad's A321LR will operate from Abu Dhabi's Zayed International Airport to short- and medium-haul destinations across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. The initial destinations for the A321LR include Phuket, Algiers, Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Copenhagen, Dusseldorf, Kolkata, Krabi, Krakow, Medan, Milan, Paris, Phnom Penh, Tunis, and Zurich.

In Economy Class, the A321LR offers 144 seats that are 18.4in wide, with a five-inch recline, 13.3in, 4K touchscreens, and USB charging. Business Class features 14 wide-body-style seats with 17.3in 4K screens, Bluetooth headphone pairing, and wireless charging.

The first-class seats on the A321LR are a departure from industry norms, typically found on long-haul flights aboard wide-body aircraft. Each suite offers two private, enclosed spaces with sliding doors, lie-flat beds, companion seating, a large 20in 4K screen for entertainment, Bluetooth pairing, and wireless charging.

Etihad's A321LR product is a differentiator on popular, high-yield, regional routes with high competition. The airline's target is to carry 38 million passengers annually by the end of the decade, revised up from a previous goal of 33 million.

This strategic effort to redefine luxury air travel on medium-haul routes while maintaining operational efficiency and sustainability is a key part of Etihad's Journey 2030 strategy, which aims to double its fleet size. Etihad plans to deliver an additional nine A321LR aircraft throughout 2025. The commercial flights on the A321LR are scheduled to start on August 1. Antonoaldo Neves, Etihad's chief executive, stated that the first-class offering on narrow-body jets will be a game-changer for the airline.

Etihad is known for its ultra-luxury product, The Residence, available on the Airbus A380. The A321LR ensures continuity with Etihad's wide-body experience and upsells to ultra-high-net worth individuals or VIPs travelling regionally or connecting onward in premium cabins.
