Lower Saxony's Renewable Energy Share Surges to 102.3% in 2024

Lower Saxony's renewable energy share has surged to an impressive 102.3 percent in 2024, according to recent data. This remarkable feat comes amidst escalating global warming and more frequent extreme weather events. Environment Minister Christian Meyer has been vocal in his support for resolute climate action.

Lower Saxony's commitment to renewable energy is evident in its significant reduction of energy-related CO2 emissions, down by almost 11 percent in the last two years. The state has tripled its photovoltaics expansion and doubled wind energy permits. However, the challenge is immense. Global warming is accelerating, threatening to exceed the 1.5°C target by 2050 and breach the Paris Agreement's 2°C limit as early as the mid-2030s.

Meyer, supporting the 'Climate Appeal', demands a consistent transformation towards climate neutrality. He calls for reliable long-term investment conditions, market growth of climate-friendly products, targeted innovation promotion, and European responsibility. Lower Saxony's recent tender round saw it receive the second-most approvals for onshore wind energy installations, with 73 sites and a capacity of 800 MW.

With renewable energy share soaring, Lower Saxony leads the way in combating climate change. Yet, the urgency to phase out fossil energies and switch to renewables remains. As extreme weather events intensify, collective action is crucial to prevent the worst impacts of global warming.
