Kampen's New Observation Platform Opens to the Public

After several months of construction, the new observation platform in Kampen, located on the beautiful island of Sylt, has officially reopened. The new platform offers a view over the North Sea and the iconic Red Cliff, a natural landmark known for its striking red sandstone cliffs along the coast.

According to Lars Lunk from Kampen Tourism Service, the platform is already highly frequented. Lunk confirmed the reopening to the German Press Agency. People are reportedly happy that the platform is back, as it was a beloved landmark of Kampen, known beyond the island's borders.

The old wooden platform, which had been in use for 20 years, was demolished at the beginning of the year due to safety concerns. The new structure is constructed using a more stable method called hybrid piles. Steel pipes form the base in the sand, followed by a dome and then wooden piles.

The new platform covers an area of approximately 300 square meters, which is slightly less than its predecessor. Despite the smaller size, the new platform aims to be easier to maintain in the long run, according to earlier reports. Visitors can reach the new observation platform via a level wooden gangway, which is accessible for wheelchair users and those with strollers.

The wood used in the construction of the new platform comes from German oaks. The estimated costs for the construction of the new observation platform are around 1.2 million euros.

The Red Cliff area is a popular viewing and hiking spot, offering panoramic views of the sea and landscape. Over time, observation platforms or viewpoints have been established above or near these cliffs to facilitate sightseeing and tourism. While no direct detailed history or construction timeline is available for the specific observation platform in Kampen, it is likely that restoration efforts have been part of coastal preservation to protect natural heritage and enhance visitor experience.

Any official landmark or protected status would relate more broadly to the natural area rather than just the observation platform itself. The region and natural features such as the "Rotes Kliff" hold cultural and environmental significance and are protected within conservation frameworks common in Schleswig-Holstein.
