Gütersloh International Celebrates Cultural Diversity in its 48th Edition

Gütersloh, Germany, played host to the 48th edition of Gütersloh International, a vibrant two-day festival held at the Theodor-Heuss-Platz, located in front of the city hall. This year's event, themed "Living Together in Gütersloh," showcased the city's open-minded and diverse spirit.

The festival, which has been running annually for four decades, was officially opened by Mayor Matthias Trepper on Saturday afternoon. In his speech, he emphasized the importance of tolerance, unity, and diversity in Gütersloh.

Liz Mohn, the matriarch of Bertelsmann, also attended the festival and expressed her appreciation for the cultural exchange that takes place in Gütersloh.

The event featured more than 40 stands representing various cultures from around the world. Visitors were treated to a smorgasbord of culinary specialties and craftsmanship, offering a taste of different cultures. Portuguese culture was represented with traditional Sagres beer, while the "Bridge of Diversity" association of the Iranian community participated for the first time, offering Persian specialties.

The stage program was varied, featuring dance and music performances from around the world. Evi Gega, a Gütersloh resident from Greece, tried Turkish food at the festival with her daughters. Visitors were encouraged to join in the celebrations, with the stage program reflecting the city's 200th anniversary and cultural diversity.

A highlight of the festival was the human chain formed by visitors across the square, demonstrating unity. The event aimed to promote cultural diversity and international understanding within the city of Gütersloh.

In a poignant moment, a moment of silence was observed at the ceremony to honour victims of the Lisbon cable car accident.

Organised by the Verkehrsverein Gütersloh (Gütersloh Traffic Association), Gütersloh International continues to be a celebration of the city's rich cultural heritage and its commitment to diversity and inclusivity.
