German Forest Fire Unit Returns Home After Successful Spain Deployment

A 67-strong German forest fire unit, GFFF-V DE1, has returned home after successfully aiding Spain in its battle against large-scale wildfires. The unit, based in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) and certified at the European level, was deployed to support regions in Extremadura and Castile and León.

The journey began on Sunday, August 17, with the convoy of 21 vehicles and three trailers setting off from NRW and arriving in northwest Spain on the same day. Upon arrival, the unit established its base in Aldeanueva del Camino, Extremadura, and immediately started extinguishing measures on August 20.

The German forces worked in shifts, facing challenging conditions including flame lengths exceeding 10 meters and high fire intensity in the areas of La Baña and San Ciprián. After largely controlling the fire in Extremadura, the unit moved to Puebla de Sanabria in the province of Castile and León. The deployment ended as planned after a week on site, with the return journey taking place from August 27 to 29.

The GFFF-V DE1 unit, consisting of firefighters from Bonn, Düsseldorf, Leverkusen, Königswinter, and Ratingen, returned to NRW after two weeks of deployment in Spain. Their efforts helped to bring the wildfires under control, demonstrating international cooperation in combating such devastating events.
