On the other hand, peptic ulcers are more likely to present with burning or gnawing upper abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, bloating, burping, loss of appetite, weight loss, and, in severe cases, bleeding leading to black or tarry stools or blood in vomit.

Treatment for stress ulcers focuses on preventing ulcer formation in high-risk critically ill patients using acid suppression therapy, such as proton pump inhibitors or H2 blockers. The primary goal is to reduce stomach acid and lower the risk of serious infection, bleeding, and shock. Treatment for peptic ulcers, however, requires a more targeted approach, including eradicating the Helicobacter pylori bacterial infection with antibiotics if positive, discontinuing or reducing the use of the offending medication, and making lifestyle adjustments such as avoiding smoking and reducing alcohol consumption.

Preventive measures for both conditions involve reducing risk factors such as NSAIDs, alcohol, and smoking. For stress ulcers, maintaining adequate oxygen and blood flow to the stomach and minimizing physical stressors are also key. For peptic ulcers, eradicating the Helicobacter pylori infection and making dietary changes are also important.

It's essential to note that stress ulcers are not the same as peptic ulcers made worse by stress. While stress can contribute to the development of peptic ulcers, stress ulcers are specifically related to physical stress.
