Manchester United Suffer League Cup Shock at the Hands of League Two's Grimsby Town

Manchester United's disappointing start to the season took a turn for the worse on Wednesday night, as they were eliminated from the English League Cup by fourth-tier Grimsby Town in a thrilling penalty shootout.

The team's performance against Grimsby Town was marked by a lack of intensity and a shaky start, with United finding themselves 2-0 down at halftime. However, Manchester United managed to draw level at 2-2 in regulation time, thanks to goals from new signing Bryan Mbeumo and captain Harry Maguire.

The match went to a penalty shootout, but it was Grimsby Town who emerged victorious, with the score ending 12-11 in their favour. New signings Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko both failed to convert their penalties, while Grimsby Town's outfield players held their nerve to secure the win.

Grimsby Town's lineup included several academy graduates and a Faeroe Islands international, showing that they were not intimidated by the prospect of facing one of the biggest clubs in England. The victory was a historic one for Grimsby Town, as they won at Blundell Park, a 9,000-capacity stadium on England's east coast.

The result of the match brought back the gloom of last season for Manchester United, who finished sixth in the Premier League and missed out on Champions League qualification. The loss also increased pressure on manager Amorim, who has only won 16 out of 44 matches since taking charge in November.

Elsewhere in midweek action, Brighton won 6-0 against second-tier Oxford, while Everton beat third-tier Mansfield 2-0. Fulham also recorded a 2-0 victory against second-tier Bristol City.

Amorim apologised to United's fans for the team's poor performance, and admitted that the result was a wake-up call for the team. "We need to learn from this defeat and work harder to improve our performance," he said.

The defeat means that Manchester United will now focus their attention on the Premier League, where they currently sit in seventh place, eight points behind leaders Arsenal. The team will be looking to bounce back from this disappointing result when they face Aston Villa on Sunday.
