Film adaptation of "The Chocolate War" takes place in Nordhorn
On Tuesday, October 7, 2025, at 6 pm, the Volkshochschule Grafschaft Bentheim in Nordhorn will host a screening of the documentary film "The Chocolate War." This thought-provoking film, directed by Miki Mistrati, sheds light on the dark side of the chocolate industry and the struggle against the structural exploitation of child workers and slaves on Ivorian cacao plantations.
"The Chocolate War" is Mistrati's third documentary, following his groundbreaking work "Dirty Hands," which caused a stir by documenting the systematic exploitation of children on West African cacao plantations. This time, the focus is on American human rights lawyer Terry Collingsworth, who embarks on a challenging mission against food giants such as Hershey, Nestlé, and Cargill.
Collingsworth's fight is not an easy one. He faces a formidable adversary in the form of these international chocolate manufacturers and cacao processors, backed by their army of lawyers. However, Collingsworth's determination is unwavering, and he repeatedly travels to Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast) to gather new evidence for his lawsuit.
The event, organized by the Steering Group Fair Trade City Nordhorn, the Working Group One World / World Shop, and the Volkshochschule Grafschaft Bentheim, aims to create awareness and foster discussion around the issues presented in "The Chocolate War." The screening will be followed by a discussion led by Stella Diettrich from the INKOTA network e.V., providing an opportunity for attendees to delve deeper into topics such as corporate responsibility, voluntary sustainability initiatives, and legal regulations like the German Supply Chain Act.
The event is free of charge, but prior registration is required via the VHS website due to limited seating. It is essential to note that this is not an advertisement, but an opportunity for discussion and awareness about the cacao industry.
Attendees will leave the event with a newfound understanding of the challenges faced by those working in the chocolate industry and the steps they can take to prevent dangerous child labor that hinders education and a child-appropriate life. By attending, they will join the conversation and help promote a more ethical and sustainable cacao industry.
