The Canadian brand Arc'teryx has released a unique ski documentary titled "Going East". This film showcases a sustainable ski expedition across Europe, with the skiers relying exclusively on public and eco-friendly transport means such as bikes and skis.

In this adventure, two athletes embarked on a ski and cycle journey across Europe’s wildest mountains, covering over 2,500 km and multiple latitudes purely by bike and ski. The journey, documented by Arc'teryx on Pinkbike, involved embracing discomfort, unpredictability, and significant planning challenges due to the variable conditions and timing for suitable snow and travel windows[1].

The documentary follows skiers Joi Hoffmann, Max Kroneck, Loic Isliker, and Silvia Moser as they travel from their respective home countries of Switzerland, Germany, Austria, and Italy to Tarvisio in northern Italy. From there, they journey east across Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, and Turkey using trains, buses, metros, trams, and even their skis and bikes[2].

The film captures the logistical and physical challenges of such travel across diverse European mountain ranges. Sleepless nights and missed buses are part of the journey, but the skiers remain undeterred. Loic Isliker, one of the skiers, emphasizes the importance of the journey to get to skiing[3].

"Going East" stands out from typical ski documentaries due to its focus on slow travel. The skiers take their time to arrive and immerse themselves in each location, allowing for evocative glimpses into far-flung mountains and huts[4]. This approach offers a unique perspective, emphasizing public transport and slow travel, in contrast to films that often rely on cars, helicopters, or snowmobiles to access mountain terrain.

Despite the difficulties, the trip is described as epic. Without the small moments in between the skiing, the trip would have been completely different, according to Isliker[5]. The documentary includes both skiing action and challenging moments, such as snorkel days, icy gulleys, and bailouts when faced with concrete slabs of snow.

You can watch "Going East" on YouTube[6]. This documentary is a testament to the spirit of adventure, sustainability, and the importance of embracing the journey, not just the destination.

The documentary "Going East" by Arc'teryx, which follows four skiers across Europe, showcases an emphasis on slow travel, home-and-garden lifestyle, and sports, as they journey through various mountain ranges using public transportation and their own means like bikes and skis. After the ski expedition, these athletes could probably also share insights on travel experiences and sports-analysis, having faced numerous logistical and physical challenges while documenting their journey.
