The Algarve region of Portugal continues to make waves in the international tourism scene, recently receiving a multitude of prestigious awards that recognise its commitment to sustainable and environmentally responsible practices.

The region has been awarded a record-breaking 91 Blue Flags, making it the Portuguese region with the largest number of beaches distinguished by this international symbol of environmental quality. Albufeira, a popular tourist destination within the Algarve, has received the most Blue Flags nationally, with 26 Blue Flags awarded to 25 beaches and the local marina.

These Blue Flags are given to tourist establishments that meet strict criteria for environmental management, social responsibility, and education for sustainability. The Algarve's commitment to environmental sustainability is further underlined by the awards received.

In addition to the Blue Flags, the Algarve region has also been recognised with 65 Green Key awards. This international eco-label is awarded to tourism establishments that meet high environmental and sustainability standards. For Turismo do Algarve and its president, André Gomes, these awards symbolise successful leadership and strategic vision in promoting sustainable tourism policies and practices that align with broader European and global efforts to reduce tourism’s environmental impact and promote social sustainability.

The Green Key awards enhance the Algarve's reputation as an eco-friendly and responsible tourism region, attracting environmentally conscious tourists and investors. The region's tourism offering continues to garner confidence from the industry and travelers.

Furthermore, 48 beaches in the Algarve region are officially marked as Accessible Beaches by the "Accessible Beach - Beach for All!" program. This initiative ensures that the region caters to all visitors, fostering inclusivity in tourism.

Praia da Falésia, in Albufeira, is among the best beaches in the world, occupying 5th place globally and 2nd place in Europe in 2025. Praia da Falésia was previously elected the World's Best Beach by TripAdvisor in 2024, further solidifying the Algarve's status as a beach destination of excellence.

The Algarve was also awarded the "World's Best Beach Destination" at the World Travel Awards for the third time, underscoring its position as a leading beach destination.

The Blue Flags, Green Key awards, and other recognitions serve as testament to the Algarve's investment in environmental practices and its dedication to sustainable tourism. With these accolades, the Algarve continues to increase its international visibility and solidify its position as a global leader in sustainable tourism.
