Examination: What Elevates Disney's Hoard to Magnificent Proportions?

Disney has placed a substantial wager on cruising. In 2022, the debut of their first Triton-class vessel, the Disney Wish, signaled the beginning of this venture. The second ship, named Disney Adventure, is scheduled to commence operations on December 21, 2024, with the third, Disney Voyage, set to launch in November 2025. With these additions, Disney's fleet will grow to six operational ships, with a seventh joining in the following year.

However, Disney's ambitions don't stop there. By 2031, they aim to expand their fleet even further, viewing sea travel as the next frontier for connecting with their fans and families.

It's no wonder that these cruises are frequently sold out, with waiting lists equal in length to the ships themselves. As part of the Disney empire, each vessel brings the enchantment of Disney, Pixar, and Marvel to life in a manner that surpasses even their theme parks.

Having never embarked on a Disney cruise, or any cruise for that matter, I was thrilled when Disney Cruise Line extended an invitation for me to experience the Adventure. In recent years, our audience at Southern Living has shown a growing interest in cruising, and for many, vacations are a shared, multi-generational experience. Prior to recommending any vacation, cruise line, or experience, we always send an editor to sample it first. So, off I set, accompanied by my four-year-old niece, brother, and sister-in-law.

Disney Treasure's Grand Hall Under Scrutiny

Upon entering the Grand Hall, the meticulous attention to detail was palpable. The Adventure is themed around the 1992 animated film "Aladdin," so Jasmine and Aladdin were greeting us from their perch at the top of the atrium. At the foot of the stairs, you could see the Genie's lamp and a statue of the characters from the film. The decorations and design of the multi-level foyer captured the essence of African and Asian destinations, as well as the fictional Agrabah, where "Aladdin" is set.

The magic was merely getting started. The Adventure boasts one-of-a-kind Disney experiences, restaurants, and encounters that can't be found in the theme parks. And the best part, from my perspective as a weary editor approaching the end of a demanding year? The atmosphere on this cruise ship was exhilarating yet relaxed.

During our three-night preview sailing in early December, we could have remained on board for an additional week (our luggage certainly bore witness to this). The Adventure's itineraries span seven nights in the Eastern and Western Caribbean, so this preview cruise served as a mere taste of what passengers will soon experience on the ship.

Here, you'll find my review of the Disney Adventure, Disney's newest cruise vessel, along with some key takeaways if you're considering setting sail for the first time on any vessel.

Staterooms

With 1,256 staterooms spread across 14 decks, the Disney Adventure offers a variety of options, including ocean-view rooms with windows, verandah rooms with walk-out patios, concierge-level suites, inside cabins, and extravagant two- and one-story suites. Each stateroom features art inspired by films like "The Lion King," "Encanto," and "Up!" During our sailing, we resided in a Deluxe Family Ocean-view Stateroom with Verandah. The room comfortably accommodated four, but a drop-down bed from the ceiling could have provided a fifth person's sleeping space. Additional sleeping quarters were provided by a convertible sofa and a bed that pulled down from the wall.

Disney has thoughtfully considered the needs of families traveling together by separating the bathroom into two areas. The toilet, with a small hand-washing sink, is located in one room, while the shower with a larger sink is in another. This arrangement made getting four dressed and ready much more efficient. Furthermore, about 75 percent of the staterooms have a connecting door with a neighboring room, making it easier for larger families to stay together.

The most exclusive lodgings on the Disney Adventure are the two-story Tomorrow Tower Suites, inspired by Epcot. Located in the ship's forward funnel, they are at the heart of the activities and gathering spaces. They sleep eight and feature four bedrooms and 4.5 bathrooms. Additional suites can be found on Decks 12 and 13, retaining the "Aladdin" theme with the Rajah and Bagheera royal suites.

The Periscope Pub, situated a few decks below, is another appealing lounge for the Treasure's passengers. This naval-themed space recalls the timeless film and amusement park attraction "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea," though unfortunately, it's no longer available at Walt Disney World. But visitors can still appreciate marine monsters and enchanting underwater landscapes while indulging in unique craft beers (my brother was a true connoisseur). Don't forget to order the burger; it's only served after 5.

Despite its popularity, Scat Cat Lounge was my undisputed favorite. This chic bar is themed after the 1970 Walt Disney animated film "The Aristocats." From the drinks to the music, everything was tailored to perfection. When I return, I'll simply make more room, even when it seems impossible.

Dining Experiences

The Disney Treasure offers three primary dining options: 1923, an upscale establishment highlighting artwork from iconic Disney films; World of Marvel, a superhero-themed dining experience; and unfortunately, these aren't best suited for the Disney Treasure. But Plaza de Coco, an all-inclusive, must-visit eatery, provides a unique two-night experience during the seven-day voyage. Guests will alternate between these three restaurants during the trip.

Examination: What Elevates Disney's Hoard to Such Magnificence?

While most Disney Cruise Line dining establishments offer standard fare like pasta, chicken, and steak, Plaza de Coco boasts authentic Mexican dishes, including enchiladas and pollo asado. As you dine, you'll be treated to a show inspired by the Disney and Pixar film "Coco." Miguel and his family serenade, dance, and share stories while you nibble on tortilla chips and dig into slow-cooked short ribs. It was our favorite meal of the cruise, and the thoughtful gesture of serving my sister-in-law birthday cake and serenading her in celebration made it even more memorable.

In addition to these three eateries, the Treasure also has two adult-only dining options, Enchanté and Palo Steakhouse. Unfortunately, we did not manage to visit either during our trip. Alternative lunch and casual dining choices include Marceline Market and Mickey & Friends Festival of Foods, featuring popular options like pizza, chicken fingers, and ice cream.

Another popular spot on the Disney Treasure is Jumbeaux's, a gelato and ice cream shop inspired by the film "Zootopia." Besides scoops, you can also get baked goods like carrot cake and cupcakes. Located on Deck 11, it's close to the pools and virtually impossible to miss.

Moana Stage Production

The Treasure has numerous theaters allowing you to watch movies almost continuously, but for an unforgettable experience, visit the Walt Disney Theater. In an extraordinary tribute, Disney has transformed the film "Moana" into a live-action spectacle on this ship, combining original Moana music with giant puppets, digital projections, and stunning sets. This "Broadway-caliber" performance is exclusive to the Treasure, and it's worth embarking on a voyage just to witness it. I wish I could have seen it again the following night. It is an extraordinary show you shouldn't miss.

For The Kids

Analysis: Uncovering the Magnificent Allure of Disney's Hidden Gem

While it may appear that any Disney cruise is mainly for children, the Treasure excels in catering to youngsters, ensuring they never experience boredom. Children of all ages are entertained with activities and experiences, making it a delightful getaway for parents as well.

My niece adored her time at Oceaneer Club, a special space for children aged 4 to 10. With rooms tailored to various child interests, such as the Marvel Super Hero Academy and Fairytale Hall with Rapunzel's Art Studio (her favorite), there's always something captivating. One evening, Rapunzel visited to read a bedtime story, while another evening, Minnie dropped by for arts and crafts.

If we even for a moment felt remorseful about leaving her behind, she would instantly communicate her joy at staying there and wishing to return for more fun at the Oceaneer Club. Meanwhile, we were free to explore shows, unwind by the adults-only pool, or enjoy a drink in one of the ship's many bars that we could have missed had she accompanied us. It was a truly fulfilling experience for everyone!

Special Touches

Disney is renowned for its meticulous attention to detail, and no location on the ship demonstrated this better than the kid-friendly counter in Marceline Market. My niece was immediately drawn to it due to its child-friendly design and offerings, which included her favorite fruits and vegetables. While it may not mean much to everyone, it was a thoughtful touch that brought her immense happiness. In turn, it delighted me, too. Thank you for considering her needs.
