Traditional Museum Festival at the Bergisches Museum
The Bergisches Museum for Mining, Crafts, and Trade is set to host a vibrant Traditional Museum Festival on Sunday, August 3, 2025, from 11:00 to 17:00. This annual event, now in its 40th year, will take place on the grounds framed by historical half-timbered buildings opposite the Technical Town Hall.
Willi Carl, chairman of the support association, said, "The festival is a perfect opportunity to show how much fun it is to convey history in a lively way." The festival promises a rich and diverse programme, making it an exciting day out for all ages.
The event features live demonstrations of historical crafts, such as baking in a historic oven, blacksmithing, spinning and weaving. Children can participate in interactive activities like making houses from clay and straw, herb salt making, crafting, and face painting. The 1907 locomotive and the hammer mill will be operational during the festival, adding an authentic touch to the day.
Visitors can also take guided tours of the museum's permanent exhibition, which provides insights into the daily life of people from the past in the region. Archaeological tours will explain the tools used for mining in the past, offering a fascinating glimpse into the area's history.
For those interested in the Bensberg ore district, lantern tours through the visitor's tunnel offer a close look at its history. The museum director, Sandra Brauer, expressed that the festival is a great concern to make regional craft traditions tangible and bring people into conversation with each other.
The festival offers a variety of regional delicacies. Refreshments will include coffee, cake, cold drinks, freshly baked bread, and hearty and vegetarian options from the grill. Admission fee is 3 euros, reduced to 1.50 euros for eligible visitors. Children under school age have free admission.
The festival is organized by the museum's support association, with many volunteers involved to continue this tradition.
