European Adventure Uncovered: Essential Insights Gleaned Before Embarking on a Motorhome Excursion Across the Continent

Navigating a Motorhome Tour Across Europe: Unforeseen Challenges and Handy Tips

Undertaking the extensive journey of a motorhome tour across Europe, several practical and regulatory considerations must be meticulously planned to ensure a seamless and enjoyable trip. Our recent adventure in Croatia taught us that no amount of preparation can predict every eventuality, but small details can guarantee a smoother journey.

Italy posed an unexpected challenge when our attempts to refill our LPG bottles were futile. Despite previously fitting a GasLow refillable double-cylinder system in our Bailey of Bristol Adamo, we could only find a limited number of attendants in Italy willing to fill our bottles. The reason behind this, we believe, is the higher taxation of LPG for cooking purposes. Motorhome owners are advised to factor additional stops for LPG refills in their itinerary or opt for a changed fuel system.

Procuring vignettes—toll stickers required for driving on motorways across Austria and Slovenia—is another essential detail to consider. Unaware of this requirement, we only discovered its necessity after being informed by a friend in a similar predicament. Both countries offer the convenience of purchasing vignettes online or at border service stations, making the process hassle-free.

Switzerland, distinct from the rest of Europe, uses a different plug type for electric hook-ups. Before arriving in Switzerland, it is advisable to secure the necessary adaptor to avoid any power supply issues.

At Slovenia-Croatia borders, the 'All Passports' lane must be utilized to secure exit stamps from Slovenia and entry stamps into Croatia, ensuring compliance with stay limits within the Schengen Area. Inbound traffic can be substantial near border crossings, leading to longer travel times; plan accordingly.

For families traveling with children, packing light in terms of toys can save space and weight without compromising their joy and entertainment. Numerous campsites offer recreational facilities, keeping children engaged and active.
