Disregarding Alerts, German Family Ventures to the Alps

In the early hours of Saturday morning, a German family of five was successfully rescued from the Austrian Tennen Mountains in the Salzburg state. The family, hailing from Baden-Württemberg near Heidelberg, found themselves stranded during a hike due to improper equipment and challenging terrain.

The group, consisting of children aged 8, 10, and 14, had embarked on an approximately seven-hour tour from the Ellmau hut in Werfenweng, despite warnings from the hut keeper. Their hiking shoes and running shoes were deemed unsuitable for the treacherous route and the presence of old snowfields.

Compounding the problem, the family started their hike late Friday morning without suitable rain gear, headlamps, or a bivouac bag. As the day turned into night, they struggled to navigate, eventually making an emergency call from the Tauern saddle around 11:00 p.m.

Upon receiving the distress call, eleven mountain rescuers from the Werfen local station swiftly climbed to their aid. Equipped with ropes, they navigated the old snowfields to safely bring the family to the Ellmau hut. All members of the family could proceed unharmed.

Operation leader Stefan Koller pointed out that the family had been on foot for 17 hours, oblivious to the mounting danger. He cautioned hikers to plan mountain tours carefully, considering the weather conditions and snow situation.

The Tennen Mountains, a prominent limestone massif in the Alps, are known for their demanding terrain. Mountain rescue operations in the area are frequently called upon to assist hikers who are lost, injured, or ill-equipped for alpine conditions, with tourists from neighboring countries like Germany commonly in need of assistance.
