Globally, the coffee scene has seen a shakeup with Sydney-based Toby's Estate Coffee Roasters clinching the top spot in a recent global ranking of top cafes. Melbourne's long-standing dominance in the Australian cafe scene was challenged as Toby's Estate outperformed its rival city.
The accolade came from a global ranking that evaluated various factors including the quality of coffee and food, customer service, sustainability practices, and more. Both public opinions and expert evaluations were used to establish the final selection, dubbed "World's 100 Best Coffee Shops."
General Manager of Toby's Estate, Jody Leslie, expressed her team's excitement upon learning about the result. "We've been in the coffee game a long time, and we know what we do is amazing. To be recognized like this is just amazing," she said. The recognition was earned not by Toby's Estate flagship shop in Sydney's Chippendale neighborhood, but by its branches across multiple countries including Singapore, Indonesia, and the Middle East.
Arkansas-based Onyx Coffee Lab and Vienna's Gota Coffee followed closely behind, each expressing gratitude for the recognition on their social media platforms. Sydney's coffee scene surged in popularity after the announcement, with Toby's Estate even hosting a free coffee day to thank its customers for their support.
Australia's cafes have been making a significant impact on the global coffee scene, offering popular menu items such as avocado toast and flat whites – both originating in the country. The rivalry between Sydney and Melbourne continues over which city brews the better cup of joe, with both cities boasting a rich coffee history and a competitive spirit among baristas.
Melbourne, known for its extensive coffee culture, has faced a few setbacks through the years. Most recently, the national title of "best flat white" was awarded to The Cupping Room in Canberra, despite Melbourne's reputation as the "unofficial coffee capital of the world."
However, if there's anything these coffee rankings agree on, it's that Australia consistently delivers top-quality coffee experiences. As Leslie of Toby's Estate noted, "Australian coffee is the best in the world, so it doesn't come down to Sydney and Melbourne."
