Croatia First to Implement New Entry/Exit System for Americans

Croatia becomes the first European country to introduce the Entry/Exit System (EES) on October 12, 2025. This new system, separate from the upcoming ETIAS online travel authorization, will change the way Americans enter Croatia. From October 12, Americans visiting Croatia will use self-service kiosks for border entry, replacing traditional passport stamps. Biometric data, including four fingerprints and a facial photograph, will be securely stored for three years. Subsequent trips will require a quick facial scan for identity verification. While Croatia is the first to adopt the EES, other major European airports may have kiosks installed but their use is not yet mandatory for all travelers. The rest of the Schengen Area will follow with a coordinated launch in the first half of 2026. Until then, travelers may encounter a mix of systems at different European borders. The EES, a collaborative effort involving various EU member states and the European Commission, is set to streamline border control processes. Americans traveling to Croatia and eventually other Schengen countries should expect a new entry process starting October 12, 2025.
