Comunidad de Luz: New Shelter Opens for Migrant Women and Children in Tijuana
Comunidad de Luz, a new migrant shelter for women and children, opened in Tijuana in April 2025. Co-established by the Episcopal Diocese of San Diego and several nonprofit and ecumenical partners, it aims to provide a dignified and self-sustainable living environment for its residents.
The shelter, licensed to house up to 150 women and children, offers a range of services to support its residents. These include basic necessities, job training, mental health services, and social worker support. Children will be enrolled in nearby public schools during their estimated one-year stay.
The facility features a large kitchen and dining room, where residents can participate in nutrition education classes and communal meals. The building has undergone significant upgrades, including an apartment for the resident coordinator. The Rev. Tony Hernandez will offer regular prayer services and pastoral care.
Funding for the shelter began with a $300,000 startup grant. While the specific founding partners are not yet public, fundraising for the shelter's future sustainment has already started.
Comunidad de Luz, with its comprehensive support services and self-sustainability goals, is set to become a vital resource for migrant women and children in Tijuana. Its opening marks a significant step towards providing a dignified and supportive living environment for those in need.
