"Colorful wonders unveiled: Magnum's 'A World in Color' show breathes life into forgotten archives at Fujikina London"
In the heart of Covent Garden, the Fujifilm House of Photography is currently hosting an unmissable exhibition, Magnum: A World in Color. This remarkable event, presented as part of Fujikina London, is free to attend and open now until October 12.
The exhibition marks the first public unveiling of a huge archival project from Magnum's Paris color library, a treasure trove containing over 43,000 slide sheets and more than 650,000 images. These images, dating from the 1950s through to the early 2000s, have remained unseen for over 20 years.
Among the legendary photographers whose work is showcased in this rediscovered archive, the late Chris Steele-Perkins is honoured with a significant portion of his archive. Steele-Perkins' images remain central to the visual documentation of Britain.
The slides are now being digitized using Fujifilm's GFX100 II medium format camera, ensuring the preservation of these valuable images for future generations. Mark Power, a Magnum photographer and participant in the exhibition, used the GFX 100S II during his work for the exhibition.
Power's project for the exhibition was motivated by a lack of representation of his hometown, Brighton, in the Magnum archive. His work emphasizes the importance of photographing familiar places, even when they may not seem glamorous. Olivia Arthur, another Magnum photographer, adds a contemporary layer to the rediscovered archive with her own images.
The digitized slides reveal a fascinating portrait of Britain, past and present, seen through the lens of Magnum's legendary photographers. This exhibition serves as a reminder of the power of visual storytelling and fosters an appreciation for the impact of photography.
Kalum Carter, a photographer, filmmaker, creative director, and writer, curated the exhibition with a focus on photography books, curation, and photo editing. Carter's work highlights the importance of studying photographs deeply to help photographers grow.
In addition to the exhibition, there are scheduled talks and book signings as part of Fujikina London on September 19 and September 26. Olivia Arthur and Mark Power, Magnum photographers participating in the exhibition, will be discussing their World in Colour projects.
Visitors to the exhibition can also enjoy brand-new work from Magnum photographers Olivia Arthur and Mark Power, adding a fresh perspective to the historical images on display. The Magnum: A World in Color exhibition in London is a must-see for photography enthusiasts and general audiences alike, offering a unique opportunity to delve into the rich history of Magnum Photos and appreciate the beauty and power of colour photography.
