Charity-led wilderness excursion
Mark Jones, a senior lecturer in Outdoor Learnings at Auckland University of Technology and a Firearms Safety Instructor, is preparing to embark on a six-week journey across Fiordland, New Zealand. The traverse, spanning approximately 200km, will start from Te Waewae Bay and end at the Milford Track.
Jones is not just undertaking this challenge for personal accomplishment but also to raise funds for Mental Health New Zealand (MHNZ). He aims to raise $10,000 for the organisation, which he believes plays a crucial role in supporting the well-being of young Kiwis, not just in school but also in the workplace.
The Fiordland traverse, with its vastness and ruggedness, is set to be Jones' biggest challenge yet. He will be relying on advice from seasoned Fiordland trampers and adventure racers for tips and expectations. To help him with his fundraising, interested individuals can head to his page for more information and to donate.
To aid him during his journey, Jones will have access to six pre-dropped caches along the way for food and supply top-ups. He will also be carrying an InReach Satellite Device provided by Trackme NZ, ensuring he can update his progress regularly on his Facebook page, OneInTheWilderness.
Jones, a resident of Auckland's Northshore, is no stranger to extreme adventures. In 2013, he undertook a solo 200km off-track journey through the Te Urewera National Park. He has also completed other challenging feats, such as kayaking 800km along the coast of Antarctica and circumnavigating South Georgia Island by kayak.
However, this traverse is being undertaken in the name of nature and mental health awareness. Jones believes that nature is a critical part of nurturing well-being and hopes that his journey will inspire others to get outdoors daily. He emphasizes the importance of community and the role it plays in supporting mental health.
Jones encourages everyone to support Mental Health New Zealand and their mission to promote well-being in New Zealand. For more information and to donate, visit his fundraising page. Follow Jones' journey on Facebook, OneInTheWilderness, as he embarks on this challenging but rewarding adventure.
