Catastrophic cloudburst in Uttarakhand leads to disappearance of 9 individuals; suspension of Char Dham pilgrimage route as a precaution
Title: Uttarakhand Landslide Disaster Leaves Nine Laborers Missing
Dehradun, Uttarakhand: A tragic incident occurred early Sunday morning, as a cloudburst-induced landslide ravaged an under-construction hotel site in Uttarkashi district's Silai village, close to the Yamunotri National Highway. Sadly, nine laborers are still unaccounted for after the disaster.
19 workers were staying at the laborers' campsite, which was swept away by the cloudburst. Wreckage from the incident also damaged approximately 10-12 meters of the highway, temporarily disrupting travel and leading to the suspension of the Char Dham Yatra for safety reasons.
"Information about the incident reached us around 3 am. The under-construction hotel near Silai underwent a landslide, and a new landslide zone developed in an area previously considered safe," says District Magistrate Prashant Arya, confirming the event in a video statement.
Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and the police are engaged in tireless rescue operations. However, ongoing heavy rainfall and the threat of thunderstorms, as per a red alert from the India Meteorological Department, have further complicated the situation.
Uttarakhand's Char Dham Yatra, one of India's most sacred pilgrimages, has been postponed temporarily in light of the inclement weather. It is a pilgrimage that traverses the holy sites of Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath, attracting millions of devotees yearly.
The authorities are also taking measures to curb the overpricing of food items during this time of crisis. The doors of the Char Dhams open for pilgrims after Diwali and close again in April-May of the following year, ushering in the six-month-long pilgrimage.
Our hearts go out to all those affected by this disaster. We pray for the safety and swift recovery of the missing workers, and we send our deepest sympathies to the families of the victims during this difficult time.
