Sycuan Tribal Council Appoints Kele Bigknife as General Counsel

Kele Bigknife, an enrolled member of the Cherokee Nation, has been appointed as the General Counsel of the Sycuan Tribal Council in San Diego, California. The appointment was made by the council on Thursday, marking Bigknife's third year of serving the tribe.

In his new role, Bigknife will be the primary legal authority for the Sycuan Tribe, overseeing legal affairs related to the tribe's activities. This includes managing legal matters for the tribe itself, supervising economic and land development affairs, and handling issues concerning the tribe’s gaming commission, human resources, and the Sycuan Casino Resort.

Bigknife's appointment reflects the tribe’s emphasis on strong legal oversight to maintain and grow tribal gaming, a critical economic driver for the tribe and a foundation for tribal sovereignty.

Sycuan Tribal Chairman Cody Martinez expressed his pride in having Bigknife as the next General Counsel. "Kele has served Sycuan admirably for nearly three years," Martinez said. "He is a strong defender of tribal sovereignty and always protects the interests of Sycuan."

Bigknife has quickly acclimated himself well within the Sycuan family. Prior to his appointment, he served as Associate General Counsel and interim General Counsel for Sycuan. He will also manage outside retained specialized legal services on an as-needed basis.

Bigknife believes that the Tribe has been a model in responsible tribal governance, infrastructure, and economic development, and tribal government gaming. He looks forward to representing Sycuan through this new opportunity and building upon the tribe's tremendous accomplishments and positive reputation.
