Biking adventure: specialist showcases Isarradweg - 290 kilometers along the riverbank
The Isar Cycling Path, a 290-kilometer route appreciated by cycling enthusiast Thorsten Brönner, winds its way through some of Bavaria's most picturesque towns and landscapes.
Starting at Scharnitz in the Tiroler Karwendel, the path passes through Lenggries, Bad Tölz, Geretsried, Wolfratshausen, and Pupplinger Au before reaching Freising, where the Isar takes a turn towards the northeast.
One of the highlights of the journey is the Isarmündung nature reserve, the final surprise of the route. Here, the calm Isar flows past two islands before silently being swallowed by the Danube.
Another noteworthy stop along the way is the Vogelfreistätte Mittlere Isarstauseen, a wetland bird reserve near Freising, which is one of the most important of its kind in Bavaria.
The section from Wallgau to the Sylvenstein Dam is a favourite stretch for Thorsten Brönner, offering a mix of asphalt and gravel paths with short climbs. Wide tires are helpful for navigating these paths comfortably.
The Isar Cycling Route is signposted with a green inscription, making it easy to follow for cyclists. The route can be completed in about five days, with approximately 60 kilometers each day, according to Brönner. However, gravel bikers can cover the 300 kilometers in three days, he adds.
The Isar Cycling Route also includes the Isar Canal, with a climb of 100 meters in altitude. The English Garden in Munich is another location along the route that cyclists will pass through.
Thorsten Brönner, the author of the book "The Ultimate River Cycling Paths of Germany," published by Bruckmann Verlag on September 29, 2021, has explored numerous regions and has over 400,000 kilometers under his belt. His book provides detailed information about the Isar Cycling Route and other river cycling routes in Germany.
After five days on the path, Thorsten Brönner and his friends travel home by train from Deggendorf. For those who wish to continue their journey, cyclists can cycle from the Isar's mouth back to Plattling or Deggendorf and take the train home.
Unfortunately, a traditional business in Upper Bavaria has recently closed after 60 years. Meanwhile, Thorsten Brönner continues to show more cycling tours online at www.thorstenbroenner.de.
In a tragic incident, a child fell 25 meters from a cliff into the depths, reminding us of the importance of safety while enjoying the beautiful landscapes that the Isar Cycling Path has to offer.
The book "The Ultimate River Cycling Routes Germany" is published by Bruckmann Verlag and costs 29.99 euros. Whether you're a seasoned cyclist or a beginner, this book is a valuable resource for anyone looking to explore the beauty of Germany by bike.
