Berlin's Friedrichstraße to Host 'Guetersloh Child' Time-Lapse Art Installation
Berlin's central street, Friedrichstraße, will soon host an unusual art installation. From September 15, 2025, fifteen fabric banners will hang above the street, displaying a unique 'slow-motion time-lapse' of a young woman from Gütersloh. This project, titled 'Guetersloh Child', is part of Gütersloh's 200th anniversary celebrations and aims to involve locals with their ideas.
The woman, whose identity remains a secret, was first photographed at age six by Wolf-Dieter Tabbert, a professional engineer and typesetter who discovered photography in his youth. Tabbert chose her for his project because she 'remained particularly true to herself' during her growth. The portraits, taken annually, capture her development from childhood to adulthood in a striking black-and-white, analog style that Tabbert prefers.
The banners, which will remain on display until October 31, are subject to the whims of wind conditions. Tabbert intervenes when necessary to untangle them, ensuring the visibility of his art. This project is set to continue annually, with Tabbert and the protagonist meeting to take a new portrait.
The 'Guetersloh Child' project is a testament to the passage of time and the resilience of individuality. It invites passersby to reflect on their own growth and change. The installation will be a unique addition to Berlin's vibrant art scene, offering a glimpse into a young woman's journey through time.
