Berlin, the vibrant capital of Germany, has once again found itself in the spotlight, this time as the recipient of the prestigious "City of the Year" award by the Food and Travel Magazine for 2022. The city's rich culinary and cultural diversity has been a significant factor in its recognition.

Oranienstraße in Kreuzberg, a street known for its cool vibe, was previously named by Time Out as one of "the world's 30 coolest streets". Berlin's diverse food scene is highlighted through numerous festivals and events, such as the International Berlin Beer Festival, Asian Street Kitchen Festival, and the Gnaoua Festival, which celebrate West African music and culture. These events, among others, promote diversity through food, music, and arts.

The city's culinary scene is also noted for chefs like René Frank, who emphasize diversity in their kitchens, attracting global attention. Berlin's efforts in celebrating and awarding diversity are more systematically acknowledged than those of Cape Town, according to the current data.

Cape Town, however, also boasts a cool street, Bree Street, which was also named by Time Out as one of "the world's 30 coolest streets". South Africa, as a whole, was named the "long-haul destination of the year" by the Food and Travel Magazine.

The award for Berlin was chosen from a list of rival nominees including Bordeaux, Cape Town, Dubrovnik, Girona, Seoul, Sydney, Tokyo, and Zurich. Burkard Kieker, the spokesperson for visitBerlin, expressed his pleasure at the award, stating that it recognizes Berlin's creative scene and the significant role food now plays in attracting tourists to the city.

The Food and Travel Magazine's awards include categories for both "long-haul" and "short-haul" destinations. The "short-haul destination of the year" was awarded to Spain. The Berliner Zeitung reported on Kieker's comments regarding the "City of the Year" award.

Berlin and Cape Town have been frequently competing for awards such as these, each city showcasing its unique blend of culture and cuisine. The recognition of both cities serves as a testament to the power of diversity and the appeal it holds for travellers from around the world.

In light of Berlin's prestigious "City of the Year" award by the Food and Travel Magazine, its diverse food-and-drink scene, including events like the International Berlin Beer Festival, Asian Street Kitchen Festival, and Gnaoua Festival, contribute to enhancing its lively lifestyle. Concurrently, Cape Town, South Africa, also honors diversity through its culinary offerings and Bree Street, recognized as one of the world's coolest streets, further emphasizing the appeal of its unique lifestyle to global travelers.
