Barcelona Council Launches €19M Project to Reintroduce European Roller and Boost Climate Resilience

The Barcelona Provincial Council is spearheading an ambitious project, Life eCOadapt50, with a budget of nearly €19 million. The main goal is to reintroduce the European roller in the Alt Camp region of Tarragona, while also expanding the Local Strategy for Climate Change Adaptation in nineteen Catalan territories.

The project, which began in 2023 and is set to conclude in 2028, builds on the success of the Life Clinomics project. It aims to increase the resilience of economically vulnerable activities and reintroduce biodiversity, with a focus on the European roller. The European roller, also known as the European hoopoe, has made a comeback in the Alt Camp region thanks to the project's efforts to recover agricultural land left fallow.

The project includes monitoring of biodiversity in various fallow land areas. Interestingly, local herds of goats and sheep have played a part in maintaining optimal conditions for steppe birds like the European roller to nest on the ground. The project also involves the installation of nest boxes to support the population of this bird, a practice that began almost ten years ago.

The Life eCOadapt50 project, led by the Climate Action Area, is a collaborative effort involving governments, socio-economic agents, and knowledge institutions. Its strategic action plan for climate change adaptation seeks to promote local adaptation to climate change in Catalonia and encourage sustainable agricultural practices that strengthen the territory's resilience and biodiversity.
